All statistics were provided by the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) which was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC describes NISVS as an “ongoing, nationally representative survey that assesses experiences of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence among adult women and men in the United States.”

In just one year, more than 1.3 million women have been raped. Nearly one in five women have been the victim of rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. Nearly one in two women have experienced other forms of sexual violence. One in five men have experienced a form of sexual violence other than rape in their lifetimes.

One in four women and one in seven men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner. Women are over four times more likely to be beaten, six times more likely to be slammed against something, and nine times more likely to be hurt by choking or suffocating.

Twelve million people will be victims of physical violence, sexual assault, rape or stalking.

Most of this victimization begins early in life, before age 25. Twenty-eight percent of male rape victims reported being victimized before age 10.

Eighty-one of women who experienced rape, stalking, or physical violence by an intimate partner reported significant short-or long-term impacts related to the violence experienced in this relationship such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and injury, while 35% of men report such impacts of their experiences.
